Annie Mary and the Silent Hero

 Tuesday: Very Annie Mary (2001)

Annie Mary is an awkward young woman living with her father in Wales. Her father owns a bakery but is known for his beautiful singing voice. Annie Mary used to sing but gave it up when her dad wouldn't let her leave. She dreams of buying her own house. Her father is very controlling and doesn't let her do anything. One day her father has a stroke and Annie Mary is forced to take care of him. She struggles to care for him and run the bakery. One of her best friends is a young woman who is chronically ill. Every year the down raises money for her. This year they want to send her to Disneyland. Annie Mary joins a pop group. They are going to enter a talent show with a cash prize. Things don't go as planned. I thought this movie was alright. There were a lot of awkward moments, but there were some funny ones too.

Wednesday: Bulldog Drummond in Africa (1938)

On the eve of his wedding Hugh Drummond finds out that a Scotland Yard colonel has been kidnapped. Colonel Nielsen is taken to Morocco by a criminal named Richard. Richard wants info on a new piece of technology that Scotland Yard is developing. If Nielsen doesn't tell him everything he will be fed to Richard's lions. Hugh, his butler, his fiancée, and friend Algy fly to Morocco to save Nielsen. The police stop him when he lands. Richard has them and the British Consulate under his control. Hugh has to come up with a new plan to save Nielsen. This movie was ok. It is a series of films. I haven't seen the others but this one looked interesting because it had lions in it.

Friday: A Quiet Place Part II (2020)

The movie starts on the very first day of the invasion. Chaos ensues. Then it jumps forward to when the first movie left off. Evelyn and her children have to find a safe place. Regan finds one using her dad's old maps. When they get there they accidentally set off traps that attract the aliens. Marcus gets badly injured. A stranger takes them in and hides them. He doesn't want them to stay. Regan has found a way to use her hearing aid and a speaker to stun the aliens. She thinks she's found a radio station that could broadcast it. Evelyn doesn't want her to go. Regan runs away to the station. Evelyn has to stay with Marcus and the baby and asks the stranger to go after her. He does and she defends her family. I thought this movie was alright. Not as good as the first. I know they have to be slow to be quiet but I just got impatient. I did like that Regan became a hero. It's cool to see a deaf girl hero.

Saturday: Benjamin (2018)

Benjamin is a young filmmaker. He had a successful movie come out seven years ago. Now he is trying for another success. His current film is about his failed relationship with his ex boyfriend. While promoting it he meets a journalist who takes him to a party. At the party he notices the lead singer of the band playing. They later meet. Noah is a young French man studying music. Benjamin and Noah hit it off despite Benjamin's extreme awkwardness. They struggle with commitment. Benjamin's film is a bomb and he tries to make another one. He starts to realize how he really feels about Noah. This movie was alright. It was really awkward. Benjamin is played by Colin Morgan, who is one of my favorites. So for that reason I enjoyed it.

Sunday: The Day I Became a Woman (2000)

This is an Iranian film. It is in three parts. The first part is about a young girl named Hava on her ninth birthday. She is now a woman and can no longer play with boys and has to start wearing a scarf. Her best friend is a boy named Hassan. When she finds out she was born at noon she argues she isn't really a woman till noon. So she can play with Hassan till noon. Her grandma agrees. But when she goes to find Hassan he is stuck inside doing schoolwork. So she buys candy for them to share before she has to go. Part two is about a young woman named Ahoo. She is taking part in a bike race. Her husband and village are very conservative. They don't think woman should ride bikes. Her husband chases her on a horse to get her to stop. She continues to ride. He gets an imam to divorce them. Then her family try to get her stop by chasing her on horseback. She continues to ride. Eventually she's stopped. The third part is about an old woman named Hoora. Hoora has been poor her whole life. But she recently came into some money. So she comes into town to buy things for her house. A boy pushes her in a cart and takes her to get everything. She gets everything from a washing machine to a wedding dress. Soon she has a parade of young boys pushing carts with all her purchases. Hoora thinks she forgot something so she has them set up everything on a beach to see what she forgot. On the beach she meets young women who were in a bike race. Later as she floats on a barge with her purchases to the ship Hava watches from the shore. This movie was alright. It was made by a woman filmmaker. She had to make the movie in three parts to get around censorship rules. Later she was able to put it together.

Surprise Chorizo and the Floating Castle

Well after two months I was finally able to go to a restaurant on my list. I went to Tight Tacos, the SE Division location. There is neighborhood parking on the streets behind it, but you might have to drive around a little. It is a small restaurant next to other restaurants and shops. They were only open for take out but there were picnic tables you could sit at on the sidewalk. The tables were in the shade so it was nice on a warm day. From what I could see inside it was clean and modern. There is some color and hanging Christmas lights. The service was good. I got three tacos: chicken, carnitas, and asada. I think that I got chorizo instead of asada. It was actually the best one flavor wise. The carnitas meat was good but there wasn't a lot of flavor. I forgot to ask for no onions so I had to scrape them off. The tacos were good. I would go back. The one problem I had was they serve the food in takeout containers. And they have tables for you to sit ...
