Mei and the Single Father

 Monday: Flower Drum Song (1961)

Mei is a young Chinese woman who travels to San Fransisco with her father. It has been arranged for her to marry a night club owner named Sammy. Sammy had forgotten that it had been set up. He is in love with the star of his club, Linda. He knows a man looking for a match for his son Ta. Ta's father, Chi-Yang, agrees to take Mei and her father in. Chi-Yang believes in the old ways. He has not conformed to how things are done in the U.S. Ta doesn't want an arranged marriage. He wants to marry for love. He falls for Linda who is only using him to make Sammy jealous. Mei starts to fall in love with Ta. This is a musical with a mostly Asian cast. A rare thing in the 60s. It was good.

Tuesday: Tamahine (1963)

Tamahine is a wild half Polynesian girl living in Hawaii. Her mom was Polynesian and her father was English. Her mother died when she was young. When her father dies she is sent to London to live with her father's cousin, Charles. He is the headmaster of an all boys boarding school. His son Richard goes there. Tamahine's wild nature makes it hard for Charles to rein her in. All the boys adore her. None more so than her cousin Richard. Although they are cousins they have feelings for each other. Richard tries to convince her that there is nothing wrong with their feelings. Charles starts to question his life choices. This movie was alright.

Wednesday: Two O'Clock Courage (1945)

Patty is a cab driver. One night a man walks in front of her cab. Luckily she stops in time. The man seems very confused. His head is bleeding. He has no memory of who he is or how he got there. Patty tries to help him. Then they hear of a murder that happened close to where she picked him up. The murder suspect's description sounds just like the man. They set out to find out who he is and if he is the murderer. This movie was ok.

Friday: City of Lies (2018)

A reporter named Jack is doing a story on the killing of the rapper Notorious B.I.G. It has been years since the murder and still no one has been arrested. Jack seeks out one of the lead detectives on the case, Russell. Russell is still obsessed with the case and trying to solve it. He lost everything over this case. He is hesitant and first to talk to Jack, but then he shares what he knows. Russell started out investigating a case where a white undercover cop shot a black uncover cop. The black cop had connections to a gang that was also involved in Notorious B.I.G's record label. Russell thinks the cases are connected. He starts to suspect there are a lot of dirty cops in the LAPD. He gets himself transferred onto the Notorious B.I.G case. His theory on who the killer is seems correct but ends up not being incorrect. As Jack interviews him they start investigating again but with no success. This movie was alright. I didn't know much about that rapper (or Tupac's) murder.

Saturday: Together Together (2021)

Matt decides that he wants a baby and he's ok raising it on his own. He finds a surrogate named Anna. They are both loners who have a hard time connecting with other people. Matt can be a little overbearing on what Anna can and can't do while she's pregnant with his baby. Although they both struggle with the situation they become friends. This movie was alright. There was a lot of awkward moments.

Sunday: Sidewalk Stories (1989)

A young black man makes money by drawing portraits. He sets up by other street performers. One day he draws a portrait of a toddler girl who has young parents. Later he sees the dad get killed with the girl nearby in her stroller. The young man tries to find her mom with no success. Although he is squatting in an abandoned building and can barely take care of himself, he decides to take care of her. They get along pretty well. He meets a success young black woman. She helps him out and they fall for each other. I thought this movie was alright. It is a silent film in black and white. It has the feel of a Charlie Chaplin film. Even though it was made in the 80s it has that silent film acting style with the exaggerated movements and gags.

Surprise Chorizo and the Floating Castle

Well after two months I was finally able to go to a restaurant on my list. I went to Tight Tacos, the SE Division location. There is neighborhood parking on the streets behind it, but you might have to drive around a little. It is a small restaurant next to other restaurants and shops. They were only open for take out but there were picnic tables you could sit at on the sidewalk. The tables were in the shade so it was nice on a warm day. From what I could see inside it was clean and modern. There is some color and hanging Christmas lights. The service was good. I got three tacos: chicken, carnitas, and asada. I think that I got chorizo instead of asada. It was actually the best one flavor wise. The carnitas meat was good but there wasn't a lot of flavor. I forgot to ask for no onions so I had to scrape them off. The tacos were good. I would go back. The one problem I had was they serve the food in takeout containers. And they have tables for you to sit ...
