Poirot and the Postcard

 Monday: Postmark for Danger (1955)

Tim is a painter living in London. One day he hears news of the death of his brother and an actress named Alison Ford. Scotland Yard comes to ask if he knew anything about what his brother was up to. Later he is hired to paint Alison's portrait. He uses her old dress as reference. After a night out he comes home to find the painting ruined and a model friend of his dead on his bed in the dress. No matter what he says he looks more and more guilty. Alison shows up at his door and tries to explain what happened. There is a mysterious postcard sent from his brother to an unknown person. Somehow it is connected to a Chianti bottle and a gang. Everything is complicated and twisted. I'm not really sure how else to summarize it. I liked this movie despite is being complicated.

Wednesday: The Alphabet Murders (1965)

Hercule Poirot is in London for a holiday. He ends up involved in a murder investigation. The first victim has the initials A.A., the second B.B, and so on. An ABC London book is left at each scene. Hercule realizes that the murderer is killing in alphabetical order. He suspects a woman named Amanda Beatrice Cross (A.B.C) who has sought him out. She seems to be connected to all the murders but he doesn't believe she is doing it of her own free will. A member of Scotland Yard is assigned to protect him. Hercule seems to be constantly getting in trouble. The Scotland Yard man and another inspector keep trying to send Hercule home but he always gets away. This movie was entertaining. Not the best but not bad. Tony Randall is Hercule. It just doesn't seem to be the right fit. He was too goofy.

Friday: Freak Show (2017)

Billy is an eccentric gay teenage boy. He adores his mother. So he is surprised when his mom disappears and he has to go live with his dad. His dad lives in a conservative town in Connecticut. Billy stands out at his school. He is bullied and harassed by almost everyone. The teachers do nothing. He does make one friend. Then he is severely beat up by a group of guys at his school. Billy is saved by the star football player Flip. Flip is at the hospital everyday. When Billy goes home Flip visits after school. They become friends. Flip admits that he doesn't really like football and would prefer to do art. Once back at school Flip asks Billy to tone it down and act more normal. This doesn't last for long. Billy can't help being who he is. He even ends up running for homecoming queen. This is a cute movie. Not the best but entertaining.

Sunday: Wings (1927)

Set in 1917 the movie starts in a small town in the U.S. Jack is a dreamer who hopes to one day be a pilot. His neighbor, Mary, has a crush on hime. Jack only has eyes for Sylvia, a girl from the big city. A wealthy young man named David also loves Sylvia. Sylvia loves David, but doesn't want to heart Jack's feelings. After WWI starts both Jack and David sign up to be fighter pilots. After some early rivalry at the training camp, Jack and David become friends. They both become good pilots and war heroes. Before a big battle they have a fight that affects how they fly in the battle. This movie was alright. It is the first movie to win the Oscar for Best Picture. I will say that a almost 3 hour long silent film is hard to get through. The movie is so old that it's not even really black and white, it's more brown and white. Although strangely the orange from fire shows up orange. Maybe they put that in when they did the restoration. There is a scene where is seems like Jack and David might have feelings for each other. They are very touchy feely. There is a lot more overacting in silent films because you can't hear what they are saying. So it might have just been that. But it looked like more than just good friends.

Surprise Chorizo and the Floating Castle

Well after two months I was finally able to go to a restaurant on my list. I went to Tight Tacos, the SE Division location. There is neighborhood parking on the streets behind it, but you might have to drive around a little. It is a small restaurant next to other restaurants and shops. They were only open for take out but there were picnic tables you could sit at on the sidewalk. The tables were in the shade so it was nice on a warm day. From what I could see inside it was clean and modern. There is some color and hanging Christmas lights. The service was good. I got three tacos: chicken, carnitas, and asada. I think that I got chorizo instead of asada. It was actually the best one flavor wise. The carnitas meat was good but there wasn't a lot of flavor. I forgot to ask for no onions so I had to scrape them off. The tacos were good. I would go back. The one problem I had was they serve the food in takeout containers. And they have tables for you to sit ...

He will get Dan and the four women onto Bob Crosby's TV show. And he will get their friends at the local deli to put up the money for it. The group is excited. They start working hard to put together some routines. Only problem is they don't actually have a spot on the show yet. Lew hasn't even been able to talk to anyone from the show. I liked this movie.
