Dancing Legends and the Trapeze Artist

 Monday: My Darling Clementine (1946)

Set in the old west Wyatt Earp and his brothers are moving cattle through Arizona on their way to California. They stop for the night near the town of Tombstone. A local rancher offers to buy the cattle. Wyatt refuses and thinks nothing of it. That night the older brothers go into town. Leaving the youngest to watch the cattle. Tombstone is a wild town. Even the current marshall can't control it. Upon arriving back at their camp they find their brother dead and their cattle gone. Wyatt decides to take over as marshall and have his brothers be his deputies. They will find out who killed their brother and took their cattle. Wyatt finds some resistance from Doc Holiday, the owner of the saloon and gambling hall. They end up working together to take down the ranchers. It all ends at the OK corral.  I thought this movie was alright. Not sure why I recorded it so long ago. Seeing how I don't really like westerns. Even though they only play the song My Darling Clementine twice, it will get stuck in your head.

Tuesday: Trapeze (1956)

Mike is a famous American trapeze artist performing in a circus in Paris. One night he attempts to do a triple but he falls and injures himself. Years later a young American named Tino comes to Paris to learn the triple from Mike. Mike hasn't been a trapeze artist in years and works as a rigger. He doesn't want anything to do with Tino. Soon he sees how talented Tino is. He agrees to be the catcher and teach Tino to do the triple. They make a good team. Lola is an Italian performer. She also works for the circus. She craves the spotlight and will do anything to become famous. She wants to be part of the act. After failing to seduce Mike, she seduces Tino. Tino convinces a reluctant Mike to let her be part of the act. She causes trouble and almost ends it all.  I liked this movie. It was interesting to see a movie about trapeze artists.

Wednesday: The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle (1939)

Vernon is a comedic performer in a variety show in 1911. On a weekend trip to the beach he meets a young woman named Irene. Irene has some talent. She sees how great a dancer Vernon is. When she comes to see his show she is surprised to see he doesn't dance at all. Her disappointment is the push he needs to start really working on dancing. He visits her every week and they work on a routine. They fall in love and get married. When they are ready they perform for Vernon's boss. He isn't interested. But some visiting French theater owners are. They offer them a job at their theater. Vernon and Irene spend most of their money getting to Paris. When they get there they find out that they aren't performing yet and won't be paid. They have to rent a small flat. Once they are able to start they find out the owners don't want them to dance. They want Vernon to do his comedy routine. The couple don't know what to do. A wealthy woman named Maggie discovers them and makes them one of her causes. She gets them to dance at Cafe de Paris. They are a hit. Vernon and Irene become famous dancers touring across Europe and the U.S. Later they decide to move to the country and settle down. Then WWI comes and changes everything. This is a good movie. Although I learned from the trivia facts that not all of it is true. The real Irene was not happy with the changes they made.

Friday: All the Bright Places (2020)

Violet is still grieving the loss of her sister when she meets Theodore Finch, the school "Freak". He saves her from jumping off a bridge. Finch takes an interest in her. He wants to help her. In their geography class they are assigned a project. They have to visit two wonders of Indiana (their home state). Finch chooses Violet as his partner. She tries to get out of it but her teacher and parents won't let her. Finch does what he can to bring her back to herself. After two wonders they decide to keep exploring. Violet gets better. And they soon fall for each other. Then Violet starts to see that something isn't right with Finch. It's her turn to save him if she can. I thought this movie was alright. It reminds me of The Fault in Our Stars. Just with mental health instead of cancer. I don't know why I keep watching these depressing movies.

Saturday: Tell it to the Bees (2018)

This movie is set in the 50s in a small town in the UK. Lydia is a single mother working in a factory to support her son. Her husband left her for reasons unknown. She is struggling to support herself and her son Charlie. Charlie finds a bee yard by a big house. The house belongs to a female doctor named Jean. Days later Charlie is hurt and taken to Jean. She invites him to come see her bees. Lydia and Jean meet and get along. Jean had been driven away from the town when she was younger when she was discovered walking in the woods with her girlfriend. She has come back to stop running away and make a life for herself. Lydia loses her job and gets evicted. Jean hires her as a housekeeper and has them move in. Soon Lydia and Jean fall in love. Being the 50s this was not welcome. They had to hide. But in a small town things don't stay hidden for long. Especially when Charlie outs them in anger. I thought this movie was ok.

Surprise Chorizo and the Floating Castle

Well after two months I was finally able to go to a restaurant on my list. I went to Tight Tacos, the SE Division location. There is neighborhood parking on the streets behind it, but you might have to drive around a little. It is a small restaurant next to other restaurants and shops. They were only open for take out but there were picnic tables you could sit at on the sidewalk. The tables were in the shade so it was nice on a warm day. From what I could see inside it was clean and modern. There is some color and hanging Christmas lights. The service was good. I got three tacos: chicken, carnitas, and asada. I think that I got chorizo instead of asada. It was actually the best one flavor wise. The carnitas meat was good but there wasn't a lot of flavor. I forgot to ask for no onions so I had to scrape them off. The tacos were good. I would go back. The one problem I had was they serve the food in takeout containers. And they have tables for you to sit ...
