Shirley Temple and the Fisherman

Monday: The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer (1947)
Margret is a judge. One of her cases involves a playboy artist, Dick, who was in a fight. She doesn't like him at all. His case is dismissed. Later Dick gives a lecture on art at Margret's sister's school. Her sister, Susan, instantly has a crush on Dick. She talks to him after the lecture. Dick is annoyed and to get her to leave him alone he says she can be a model for one of his paintings. He has made the same promise to many women. Susan later sneaks into Dick's apartment without him knowing. Before he can get her to leave they get caught. Margret, also Susan's guardian, decides not to press charges. Instead Dick will date her sister until the crush goes away. Hilarity ensues. I thought this movie was entertaining. A little weird that she would let her teenage sister date an adult man. Susan was played by Shirley Temple. I had only ever seen her as a kid. So it was interesting to see her grown up.

Tuesday: Captain Courageous (1937)
Harvey is a spoiled boy who think money can buy anything. He is mean to the other boys at his school. His teachers are fed up. Mr. Cheyne, his father, believes Harvey just needs some more attention. So he brings Harvey along with him on a business trip to London. They travel by ship. After getting in trouble once again Harvey accidentally falls off the ship. He is rescued by a Portuguese fisherman named Manuel. Manuel takes him back to the ship he works on. Harvey demands the captain take him to his father or back to land. The captain won't do it. They have to follow their three month route. If they go back they will lose on catching fish and lose money. So Harvey is stuck on the ship. He refuses to do any work. Manuel is given the task of making Harvey work. Manuel has a soft spot for Harvey and doesn't work him as hard as he should. Harvey has some false starts but he eventually starts to learn about hard work and being part of a team. This is a really good movie. I enjoyed it. It was a littler weird to hear Spencer Tracy, Manuel, with a Portuguese accent.

Wednesday: Odd Man Out (1947)
An Irish nationalist named Johnny plans a bank heist. It doesn't go as planned. He ends up in a fight with a bank employee. He is shot and accidentally kills the bank employee. Johnny's crew try to help him into the car, but they have to leave in a hurry and he ends up in the road. He hides. No one can find him. He travels through the city injured. Johnny can't stay in one place long before he is discovered. This movie is alright. It's a lot him thinking he's safe and then having to leave again. Getting weaker and weaker.

Sunday: The Triplets of Belleville (2003)
This is a French animated film. Madame Souza becomes the guardian of her grandson after his parents die. She does everything to make him happy. When finally she discovers he really wants a bike. He is so excited to have a bike. Then we see him as an adult. He is training for Tour de France with the help of his grandma. During the race he is kidnapped and taken to a big city. Madame Souza follows him. She loses track of him. With no money she is forced to sleep under a bridge. She is discovered by triplets who were known as the Belleville Sisters, a song and dance group who were famous in the past. They take her in and help her find her grandson. He is being held hostage by a gangster who wants him for a bike race betting scheme. This movie has been on my list for a while. It is interesting. There are very few lines so it doesn't really matter that it is in French. The animation is very unique. Weird and a little creepy. The grandson is stick thin with giant biker legs, a huge nose, and with a constant sleepy expression. He is so creepy. I thought he was going to give me nightmares. Not that he is that scary but just weird.

Surprise Chorizo and the Floating Castle

Well after two months I was finally able to go to a restaurant on my list. I went to Tight Tacos, the SE Division location. There is neighborhood parking on the streets behind it, but you might have to drive around a little. It is a small restaurant next to other restaurants and shops. They were only open for take out but there were picnic tables you could sit at on the sidewalk. The tables were in the shade so it was nice on a warm day. From what I could see inside it was clean and modern. There is some color and hanging Christmas lights. The service was good. I got three tacos: chicken, carnitas, and asada. I think that I got chorizo instead of asada. It was actually the best one flavor wise. The carnitas meat was good but there wasn't a lot of flavor. I forgot to ask for no onions so I had to scrape them off. The tacos were good. I would go back. The one problem I had was they serve the food in takeout containers. And they have tables for you to sit ...

Young Ming-Na Wen and the Con Man's Apprentice

Monday: Two Tickets to Broadway (1951)        Nancy is the star of her small town. She wants to be on Broadway. On her way to New York City she meets three woman who's agent is unreliable. Once in the city she meets another Broadway hopeful, Dan. None of them are having luck getting work. The women's and Dan's agent, Lew, comes up with an idea. He will get Dan and the four women onto Bob Crosby's TV show. And he will get their friends at the local deli to put up the money for it. The group is excited. They start working hard to put together some routines. Only problem is they don't actually have a spot on the show yet. Lew hasn't even been able to talk to anyone from the show. I liked this movie. It is fun. Tuesday: Paper Moon (1973)         Addie is a young girl who's mother passed away. At the funeral she meets a man, Moses, who reluctantly agrees to take her to her aunt's house in another state. She thinks he could be her father. But he won't a...

Really Veronica is in New York to see an old love. Poor Leslie tries to be happy for Jimmy, who she is secretly in love with. I thought this movie was good.
